I recall that a few decades ago, Syed Babar Ali, a friend\r\nand mentor, called to reveal his research that in the 350 years history of\r\nHarvard University, Tariq and I were the only two brothers that had Doctorates\r\nof Law from there; he did not get a\r\nchance to change and arrived in a green polo shirt; his giving a memento from\r\nthe Shaikh Ahmad Hassan family to the Vice Chancellor LUMS remains my favourite\r\nphotograph of that event in my book, Stories of Gratitude; it was in the next 2\r\ndays that I accompanied him for medical tests in Lahore that it was first\r\ndiscovered that he may have cancer; soon thereafter, I accompanied him to New\r\nYork for his first visit to Sloane Kettering; I always stayed with\r\nTariq in Islamabad and he made it a point each time I stayed with him to inform\r\nme that I should treat his house as mine and stay there whether he is himself\r\nin Islamabad or not; this time, he was so unwell that Omar, \u003cu\u003emy son, his\r\nwife, Fatima, daughter, Natasha\u003c/u\u003e and I decided to stay with Mona Khalil, \u003cu\u003emy\r\nniece-in-law, her husband then out of town\u003c/u\u003e; but while Omar and family drove\r\nstraight to Khalil\u0027s house, I headed straight to Tariq for his blessings before\r\nthe award; on my request, we sat out in the garden, with the flowers in bloom\r\nand the amazing diversity of birds in sight; I am sure that he, encouraged by \u003cu\u003ehis\r\nwife and my bhabi\u003c/u\u003e, Riffat, had made the herculean effort to see his brother\r\nreceive the award in a ceremony and speeches that lasted well over 3 hours; in spite of his physical condition, Tariq walked me\r\ndown to my car and although he spoke bravely about returning, fully mended,\r\nafter his upcoming visit with Riffat to New York and Sloane Kettering, I had\r\nbegun to think of this as my last meeting with my beloved brother; his colleagues in the\r\nprofessional bodies that he worked with mention his vision, integrity and ready\r\nability to stand up to wrong-doing; his friends mention his cheer and wit; his\r\nadversaries comment on his fairness; his siblings treasured his devotion and\r\ncaring and his being there for each of us when we needed him; he organised a\r\ncousin online chat group and was each cousin\u0027s \u0026quot;favourite\u0026quot;,\r\nconfidante and the first port of call for the happy and not so happy events of\r\ntheir lives.
